Class Media Group founder Alhaji Seidu Agongo has underscored the central role of trust in media, leadership and society at the official launch of Accra TV, the group’s newest television station.
Speaking at the event, Agongo told guests, partners, staff and audiences that while the excitement of a new channel was welcome, the occasion demanded deeper reflection on a more fundamental issue: trust.
“Trust is the foundation of every successful relationship – from family through community to society,” he said. “Trust is what allows citizens to believe in leaders, employees to believe in employers, businesses to believe in customers, and communities to believe in one another.”
He noted that trust had come under severe strain in Ghana and globally, with citizens questioning the motives of leaders, employers worrying about loyalty and employees questioning fairness. The challenge of the era, he argued, was not a shortage of information but the difficulty of determining what is credible, transparent and true.
In that context, Agongo said the media served as the essential bridge between institutions and the public, between facts and understanding — a bridge that could stand only if built on trust.
“Trust cannot be demanded. Indeed, trust gotten through demands is unsustainable. Rather, it must be earned,” he declared. “Trust is earned through accuracy, fairness, consistency and accountability. It is earned when we verify before we publish, when we inform rather than inflame, and when we have the courage to correct whenever we err.”
Agongo stressed that Class Media Group’s most valuable asset had never been its studios, cameras or transmitters, but its credibility — a standard Accra TV would be expected to uphold. Drawing on his experience as a businessman who had navigated “almost all the cycles of life and entrepreneurship,” he said the true test of trust was not behaviour in easy times but conduct when transparency proved difficult.
He assured stakeholders, particularly viewers, that Accra TV was committing itself to serving as a trusted platform for facts, dialogue and accountability — one that “listens, informs and serves.”
“When trust grows, societies prosper, businesses succeed, and democracy flourishes,” Agongo said. He thanked those who had supported Class Media Group through “turbulent to calm waters” and called on all present to help build a culture of trust.
The speech closed with a call for the continued success of Class Media Group and Ghana, and a prayer for divine blessing.
