The senior and junior staff unions of the Electricity Company of Ghana (ECG) have directed members to begin a series of protest actions against the government’s intended privatisation of the power distributor.
In a statement issued by the National Division of the Senior Staff Union (SSU) and Junior Staff Union (JSU), the unions said the National Executive Council had earlier this year approved measures to resist the planned Private Sector Participation (PSP) arrangement.
Beginning Tuesday, 15 September 2026, all union members are required to wear red armbands to work. The directive will remain in force until the following week, when further action is expected to be announced. Members have been instructed to continue performing their normal duties while wearing the armbands.
Branch executives have also been ordered to replace existing red flags at operational sites with larger ones that clearly state the reason for the protest. Union leaders emphasised that compliance is mandatory.
The statement was signed by Bro. Christopher Apawu, Chairman of the Senior Staff Union, and Bro. Larry Lucky Agboka, Chairman of the Junior Staff Union. It closed with a call for solidarity.
The unions maintain that the planned privatisation of ECG threatens the interests of workers and the public utility. No immediate response from ECG management or the Ministry of Energy was available at the time of publication.
