The New Patriotic Party’s Spokesperson on Sports, Hon. Seth Panwum Boyoyo, has demanded the resignation of the Ghana Football Association (GFA) President, citing a sharp decline in the Black Stars’ standards following consecutive defeats in the 2027 Africa Cup of Nations qualifiers.
Ghana suffered a 4–2 home loss to The Gambia at the Accra Sports Stadium on Tuesday, surrendering a two-goal lead in a dramatic collapse. The result followed a 2–0 away defeat to Côte d’Ivoire in the opening Group C fixture, leaving the Black Stars without a point from their first two matches.
In a strongly worded statement, Boyoyo described the home reverse as “more than a disappointing football result” and “a serious warning about the direction of Ghana football.”
He stressed that the defeat on home soil was particularly painful for supporters who expect the national team to compete strongly in Accra.
Boyoyo rejected excuses linked to injuries or individual player performances. He noted that Côte d’Ivoire and The Gambia had also lost key players yet produced better results through superior management, match preparation and tactical execution. “We cannot normalise this,” he stated.
Drawing a contrast with previous campaigns, Boyoyo recalled that under the previous NPP administration the Black Stars maintained a strong home record in competitive matches and secured important results, including a 1–0 home win over Mali during the 2026 World Cup qualifiers. He argued that the current trajectory represents a worrying drop in standards that requires accountability at the highest level of the GFA.
“As NPP Spokesperson on Sports, I am therefore calling on the President of the Ghana Football Association to take responsibility for the current state of Ghana football and resign from office,” Boyoyo said.
“This is not a call I make lightly. The GFA President occupies the highest leadership position in Ghana football, and with leadership comes responsibility.”
He outlined several reforms he believes are urgently needed: a comprehensive technical review of the Black Stars; transparent assessment of national-team preparation and player management; stronger accountability within the GFA; a clear long-term development strategy; greater investment in youth and domestic football; and deliberate steps to restore supporter confidence. Leadership, he insisted, must prioritise the long-term interests of Ghana football above individual ones.
Boyoyo emphasised that the Black Stars belong to the Ghanaian people and are not the property of the GFA, government, any political party or individual. While pledging continued support for the players who wear the national colours, he maintained that such support must not silence legitimate demands for higher standards and accountability.
“Ghana football deserves better. The Black Stars deserve better. And the Ghanaian football supporter deserves accountability,” he concluded, reiterating his call for the GFA President to step aside so that a new leadership direction can emerge.
The statement is expected to intensify public debate over the national team’s direction and the performance of the GFA leadership in the wake of the heavy home defeat.
