The National Petroleum Authority (NPA) has moved to calm public anxiety regarding Ghana’s fuel supply, categorically stating that the country holds sufficient petroleum reserves to meet both current and projected demand.
The assurance comes in response to mounting speculation and public concern that recent volatility in the global energy market—driven by escalating geopolitical tensions in the Middle East—could trigger a domestic shortage.
In a statement released on Wednesday, the Authority emphasized that the national fuel supply situation remains “stable and firmly under control.”
Sufficient Reserves Nationwide
Following a comprehensive stock review conducted alongside the Ministry of Energy and Green Transition, the NPA confirmed that there are ample supplies of:
- Petrol (Premium Motor Spirit – PMS)
- Diesel (Automotive Gas Oil – AGO)
- Aviation Turbine Kerosene (ATK)
- Liquefied Petroleum Gas (LPG)
Recent data from the Authority suggests that Ghana currently maintains a buffer of approximately five to seven weeks of stock for key products, bolstered by consistent production from the Sentuo Oil Refinery and the Atuabo Gas Processing Plant.
Proactive Market Monitoring
To safeguard the market against global shocks, the NPA noted it is working in close coordination with International Oil Trading Companies (IOTCs), Bulk Import, Distribution and Export Companies (BIDECs), and BOST Energies.
“The Authority is strengthening strategic supply planning and price monitoring mechanisms to mitigate any potential supply disruptions or price volatility arising from developments in the global petroleum market,” the statement read.
While global crude prices have hovered near seven-month high, the NPA highlighted that proactive measures are in place to ensure timely imports and consistent availability at the pumps.
A Warning Against Panic Buying
The Management of the NPA urged the general public to refrain from “panic buying,” noting that such behavior creates artificial pressure on a distribution chain that is currently functioning normally.
The Authority reaffirmed its commitment to transparency and consumer protection, promising to provide regular updates as the global situation evolves.
