Former Vice President Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia has expressed profound grief over the tragic deaths of six young Ghanaians during the Ghana Armed Forces (GAF) recruitment exercise.
He conveyed his sympathies to the bereaved families, assuring them of the nation’s collective support during this difficult time.
In a message shared on his official Facebook page, Dr. Bawumia described the incident as deeply tragic and prayed for comfort for the bereaved families and speedy recovery for those injured.
He wrote: “My condolences go out to the families of the young Ghanaians who lost their lives today at the El-Wak Stadium. May the injured recover quickly, and the souls of our departed ladies rest in peace.”
The stampede occurred when thousands of job seekers gathered at the El-Wak Sports Stadium to participate in the Ghana Armed Forces (GAF) recruitment exercise. Eyewitness accounts suggest that the overwhelming crowd and intense pushing at the entry points triggered chaos, resulting in multiple injuries and fatalities.

The Ghana Armed Forces later confirmed that six people — all female applicants — had died, while several others sustained various degrees of injuries and are receiving treatment at the 37 Military Hospital. Some of the injured remain in critical condition.
Following the incident, the GAF announced the immediate suspension of the recruitment exercise and pledged full cooperation with investigators to determine the causes of the tragedy and prevent a recurrence.
The incident has sparked widespread grief and renewed public concern about crowd control and safety management during large-scale national recruitment exercises.
