The German Embassy in Accra has expressed profound sorrow over the passing of Charles Kwadwo Fosu, alias Daddy Lumba.
Joining Ghana and music lovers worldwide, the embassy highlighted his monumental contributions to music and culture, acknowledging the enduring legacy he leaves behind.
Germany played a pivotal role in shaping Daddy Lumba’s illustrious career. It was during his time there that he transitioned from gospel music to highlife, a move that would define his artistic journey. In 1989, a significant encounter with fellow musician Nana Acheampong in Germany led to the formation of the iconic Lumba Brothers.
Their collaboration was instrumental in the rise of “Borga Highlife”—a vibrant genre blending traditional Ghanaian rhythms with Western influences, which emerged from the thriving Ghanaian diaspora in Germany.
Daddy Lumba’s connection to Germany ran deep. He resided in Cologne and frequently recorded music in Düsseldorf and Monheim am Rhein, working alongside renowned German producers. His song “Homeless” even featured German phrases, a rare and symbolic gesture reflecting his lived experience between two distinct cultures.
The German Embassy’s statement underscored its respect for Daddy Lumba’s artistic excellence and celebrated the lasting cultural bridges he helped build between Ghana and Germany.
“Rest in power, Daddy Lumba,” the embassy concluded, extending heartfelt condolences.
