STOP NPP Amid COVID Scare – Legon Students

A group of level 400 students of the University of Ghana is set to petition the University of Ghana Sports Directorate to prevent the New Patriotic Party from holding its National Annual Delegates Conference scheduled for the 17th to 19th July 2025 at the UG Sports Stadium, amid covid -19 resurgence scare.

The students have raised concerns over possible escalation of the pandemic, consequently spreading further to the rest of the country if delegates of the political party from all over the country are allowed to commute on the stadium which is now a fertile infestation ground, insisting that the party will flout all the 6 protocols issued by the University Health Directorate against covid-19 prevention.

The University of Ghana Health Services Directorate issued public notice announcing resurgence of COVID-19 cases on the university campus and surrounding areas.

The directive, dated June 23, 2025, ‘urged students, staff, and visitors to remain vigilant and adhere strictly to preventive measures to curb further spread of the disease’.

In the same vein, however, the office of the Dean of Students on the 25th June 2025, sent a public notice that due to the resurgence of COVID-19 cases on the University of Ghana campus, ‘it has become necessary to suspend all social gatherings with immediate effect. The ban affects all student bodies, including the Graduate Students’ Association of Ghana (GRASAG), Student Representative Council (SRC), Junior Common Room (JCR), as well as departmental and school associations planned week celebrations and activities’’.

Not only that, on the 28th June 2025, the SRC admonished students to adhere to all protocols in order to mitigate the impact of the spread of the pandemic in the university campus.

Finally, the Minister of Health in his briefing in the Parliament House on the 1st July 2025 indicated that, 316 suspected cases so far have been recorded on the University community ,107 are confirmed cases. He reiterated ‘So far the outbreak is limited to the university community. It has not spread to other parts of Accra and the rest of the country’, he noted.

It is against this backdrop that these agitated students are calling for a stop to the New Patriotic Party’s National Annual Delegates Conference in order not to become a vehicle to drive the spread of the pandemic to the rest of the country. It is therefore urging not only the Sports Directorate but also the University Management and the Government at large to engage the leadership of the New Patriotic Party to halt their planned conference with immediate effect in order to save the entire country from going into another lockdown.
